Monica Moore Thompson
In 2007, Monica and her husband, John Thompson III launched the John Thompson III Foundation to raise public awareness and funding for non-profits that address the needs for healthcare or education for children and families most affected by poverty. Past beneficiaries of the foundation include, Washington Jesuit Academy and Capital Breast Care Center.
In addition to running the foundation, Monica serves on the following local boards:
Teach for America (DC region)
Beauvoir: The National Cathedral Elementary School
Capital Breast Care Center (an initiative of Georgetown/Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center)
Prior to relocating to Washington, DC, Monica was an Associate Director of capital giving at her alma mater, Princeton University. She helped to raise endowment support during the 250th Anniversary Campaign, in which the University raised $1.1 billion from 1995-2000. In addition to soliciting campaign gifts, Monica helped to develop strategy to engage and identify young alumni and future donors in the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan regions.
In 2009, Monica co-chaired the Annual Giving campaign for her 20th Reunion, which successfully raised over $1 million and increased class participation of giving to a record level of 62%.
Currently, Monica serves as a lead Steering Committee member and helped to launch the Connect initiative at Princeton. The mission of Connect is to engage African-American alumni more deeply and to strengthen their role in the life of the university by enhancing their efforts as volunteers and donors in the current Aspire campaign. She also serves on the Executive Committee of that campaign.
In addition to her board service and volunteer work, Monica has co-chaired the Host Committee for Sibley Hospital’s Hope & Progress Gala in 2008. She and Coach Thompson were guest speakers at the Capital Breast Care Center’s first annual Gift of Life Breakfast and Sibley Hospital’s Breast Health Knowledge is Power 2007 conference. Men Against Breast Cancer awarded Monica and Coach Thompson with the 2008 Gayle Peck Courage Award. She has also served on the Benefits Committee for the Arena Stage’s annual fundraising event for community engagement and was the guest speaker at the WNBA Mystics Breast Health Awareness game in 2008.
