Teach for America Week 2009
On March 6, 2009, Monica participated in the Teach For America Week, where she taught a fifth grade English class at the Friendship Public Charter School, Chamberlin Campus. Each year, Teach for America (TFA), engages hundreds of public figures nationwide to serve in America's classrooms for a day. This year's guest teachers in the D.C. Region included, Congresswoman Donna Edwards, Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Paul Begala, Wendy Paulson, Gina Adams and Hilary Gillen. Foundation Toy Drive
The John Thompson III Foundation hosted its Second Annual Toy Drive this past holiday season during a Georgetown University men's basketball home game at Verizon Center.
The Hoya Hoop Club hosted a pre-game reception where Hoop Club members and friends were asked to donate an unwrapped toy to benefit the #2 Boys & Girls Club and children from the Perry Center.
2nd Annual JTIII Foundation Community Fest
On Saturday, October 18, Coach Thompson, in conjunction with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation hosted the 2nd Annual JTIII Foundation Community Fest at Oxon Run Park in Southeast DC. District youth, seniors and families experienced a full day of education and entertainment, including arts and crafts, games, music, basketball clinics and a wide array of physical fitness drills. Over 25 community groups that service the Anacostia community provided information about their outreach services.
In addition, the Southeast Tennis & Learning Center (a 2007 JTIII Foundation partner) hosted the Heart to Heart Tennis Tournament. Coach Thompson called a celebrity tennis match between tennis legend Zina Garrison and WPGC 95.5 FM radio personality Donnie Simpson. Other guests included the Honorable Councilmember Marion Barry (Ward 8), DPR Director Clark E. Ray, CEO/Founder of the Recreation Wish List Committee Cora Masters Barry, and other city leaders.
The John Thompson III Foundation Mission
The mission of the John Thompson III Foundation is to foster recently established non-profits that serve at-risk children and families. The primary focus being education and healthcare for families. Our goal is to raise funding and bring awareness to the partners we support.
The Foundation partners primarily, but not exclusively, with non-profits in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region, that specialize in programs targeted to underserved children and families.
